Digital - Lotus NotesBench performance records shattered; Lotus Domino 4.5
Server now available on DIGITAL NT AlphaServer systems
{Livewire, Worldwide News, 27-Jan-97}
DIGITAL today announced breakthrough performance results for Lotus Domino on
DIGITAL AlphaServer systems running Microsoft Windows NT. The announcement
was made at the Lotusphere trade show in Orlando, Fla.
In addition, the company announced the availability of Lotus Domino 4.5
Server on its AlphaServer systems and Prioris Intel-based Windows NT systems.
Domino is a market-leading solution for messaging, groupware and collaborative
Web applications.
The DIGITAL dual-processor AlphaServer 4100 5/400 achieved record-setting
results, with 3,100 concurrent mail users at a one-second response time. The
benchmark tests were conducted by DIGITAL using Lotus NotesBench, and audited
by KMDS Technical Associates.
Lotus NotesBench provides a methodology and tools for measuring Notes and
Domino server performance. DIGITAL is a charter member of the NotesBench
Consortium, an independent organization dedicated to providing Domino and
Notes performance information to customers. NotesBench results can be found
at http://www.lotus.com/ntsdoc96, or at
http://www.digital.com/info/alphaserver.
Domino 4.5 on DIGITAL NT servers
Domino 4.5 on AlphaServer systems and Intel-based Prioris servers running
the Windows NT operating system enables customers to consolidate a Lotus Notes
and Domino server environment. A single AlphaServer system can replace dozens
of other servers, resulting in significant cost savings. ServerWORKS system
management software, included with every AlphaServer system, simplifies
server and network management. Customers also benefit from increased
operating efficiency and a lower cost of ownership.
With DIGITAL Cluster software for Windows NT, multiple systems can be
grouped together to ensure continuous, uninterrupted services and provide
investment protection for Lotus Domino users.
According to Tom Loch, vice president and CIO of Universal Pensions,
Brainerd, Minn., "Our business needs a single platform to meet our Windows NT
and Lotus Notes enterprise processing environments. The DIGITAL/Lotus
solution provides two critical solutions: it meets the high demand for both
CPU and I/O routines, and it cost-effectively scales to accommodate our
business growth."
"We selected the DIGITAL AlphaServer 4100 with Lotus Notes and Domino for
the express reason that it gets very, very critical trading information to
exactly where it's needed in an extremely quick, efficient, and accurate way,"
said Thomas Ryan, president, American Stock Exchange.
Steve White, data processing operations manager for the Texas Association of
Counties, added, "The AlphaServer gives us extraordinary Notes performance.
It's one of the most powerful servers I have ever worked with. I nearly
needed a seat belt to operate it!"

| 45.11 | AS4100 is Datamation 'Server of the Year' | MOVMON::DAVIS | Wed Feb 12 1997 09:43 | 47 | |
Datamation Readers Name DIGITAL AlphaServer 4100 "Server of the Year"
... AlphaServer platform honored for unprecedented third straight
year...
MAYNARD, Mass. -- February 4, 1997 -- For an unprecedented third
consecutive year, the DIGITAL AlphaServer 64-bit platform has taken top
honors in the prestigious "1997 Products of the Year" voting by readers
of Datamation Magazine, a Cahners publication. Named IS managers choice
for "1997 Server of the Year," the AlphaServer 4100 system succeeds the
past two years' winners, the AlphaServer 8400 and AlphaServer 2100
models, respectively.
In announcing its pick of top server systems for 1997, Datamation said,
"DIGITAL continues to lead the industry with a fully 64-bit combination
of hardware and operating systems -- DIGITAL UNIX and OpenVMS ....
DIGITAL consistently achieves some of the highest industry benchmarks."
"We are pleased that Datamation readers continue to recognize the
superior performance and affordability designed in to the 64-bit
AlphaServer platform," said Pauline Nist, DIGITAL vice president of
AlphaServer Business. "HP, IBM, Sun and others continue to follow the
DIGITAL lead. But they and their customers still face years of costly
migrations just to reach the power, scalability, and value which the
Alpha platform delivers today."
The AlphaServer 4100 system is the industry's first midrange
implementation of 64-bit very large memory (VLM64) capacity, which
provides extremely fast database and application performance. Like all
AlphaServer systems, it takes advantage of the industry's fastest
processors, advanced clustering technology, thousands applications
optimized for high-performance 64-bit computing, and a choice of
DIGITAL UNIX, OpenVMS, or Windows NT operating systems.
The AlphaServer 4100 platform is ideal for a wide variety of
applications and can be easily scaled to meet the changing needs of
large enterprises, small companies, and departments. It is designed to
provide high transaction throughput, availability, and reliability for
Internet commerce, data warehousing, mail and messaging, and business
and technical applications. Prices start at $42,500.

Be careful: The AlphaServer 4100 was "tied" with the Compaq 5000 and HP

Compaq's own press releases will too!

Digital - Speed, I/O capacity boosted on midrange AlphaServer systems
{Livewire, Worldwide News, 26-Feb-97}
Enterprise, decision support, Internet, and financial application
customers will achieve greater application performance with the
enhanced AlphaServer 4000 and 4100 midrange systems, now powered by a
super-fast 64-bit DIGITAL Alpha chip running at 466 MHz. For added
scalability and investment protection, AlphaServer 4000 models can now
be upgraded to provide twice the I/O capacity.
The AlphaServer 4100 is expandable to four processors, supports up
to 8 GB of ECC memory, highest in its class, and supports up to 7.5 TB
of total storage capacity. The AlphaServer 4000 models are scalable to
two Alpha processors and to 4 GB of memory.
Powered by DIGITAL Alpha processors running at a blazing 466 MHz,
the new AlphaServer 4000 and 4100 models are available now and are
priced from $49,500 and $57,500, respectively, each with 512 MB of
memory and a 4 GB disk. A 5/466 CPU upgrade is available for existing
300 MHz and 400 MHz models of the AlphaServer 4000 and 4100 models.
Prices start at $8,000.
The new 64-bit PCI I/O expansion option enables users to double the
I/O capacity and bandwidth of AlphaServer 4000 models, providing
customers enhanced performance and an additional upgrade path. This
option upgrades the system to four independent 64-bit PCI I/O channels
with 16 slots, which can increase I/O bandwidth to 1 GB/second.
Record-setting benchmark results
DIGITAL also announced record-setting transaction processing, Lotus
Notes, and Internet benchmark results. Alpha systems shattered all
other Windows NT and UNIX performance results for Lotus Notes 4.5 --
3,350 mail users at $31/user with the AlphaServer 4100 5/466 with two
processors and 1 GB of memory on Windows NT 4.0. The AlphaServer system
generates 58 percent more users than a Compaq ProLiant 5000 6/200, and
91 percent more capacity than an HP NetServer LX 5/166.
The story is similar for transaction processing, where DIGITAL
systems provide TPC-C price/performance leadership for two-processor
UNIX-based systems. The AlphaServer provides 16 percent better
performance than an HP 9000 D370, more than twice the performance of a
Sun Enterprise2, and even better performance and price/performance than
the six-CPU Sun UltraEnterprise 3000.
And finally, AlphaServer systems raise the bar for SPECweb96
benchmark scores -- 1157 operations/sec with the uniprocessor
AlphaServer 4000 5/400 and 1544 operations/sec with the with the
dual-processor AlphaServer 4000 5/466, both with DIGITAL UNIX. DIGITAL
now delivers the highest SPECweb96 performance of any one- and two-
processor systems, making Alpha the Inter/Intranet platform of choice.
