I am currently involved in a bid with a customer who wishes to manage their DEC, Chipcom and PC environment. As you can imagine, they were not overly impressed with the graphic interface. As it happens they postponed the bid because all 3 vendors promised more than could realistically be delivered against the tendor. With Hubwatch due to be released, is there any way that using SNMP Hubwatch could be used to manage Chipcom hubs, or alternatively the DECmcc graphical interface modified to represent hubs physically, instead of offering MIBs as forms ? If there are plans a-foot, when are they due to come to fruition ? Thanks &*( Rex ******** Cross posted in HUB_MGMT conference *********

graphical forms, as you have probably already guessed, are
not on the list of supported features for V1.2 of the
DECmcc director. It sounds like the environment you are trying
to make a bid for is SNMP only, therfore you might want to
check out the DECmcc MSU product. MSU is a more specialized
product for the SNMP environment and may meet your needs
better.

Actually, it may not be that bad. With the launching ability of V1.2,
you can now quazi-integrate unix applications with MCC. Synoptics
already has one that can be launched - Chipcom is "in negotiation".
This style of management is today's "state of the art". Future systems
will have standard hub, router, bridge, etc configuration applications
that are object oriented, and support varients for different vendors.
Sort of the 'flight simulator' approach. Hopefully, DECmcc will be one
of those with this feature - One of SNMP's new features allows a
management system to 'know' what kind of device it is, and then look up
the specific mibs and applications that go with it from a table,
presenting the user with a much more 'appropriate' management panel.
