Many of the layered products use stacked braces and brackets in their
syntax diagrams. DOCUMENT (baselevel 8 and previous versions) has
never been able to cope adequately with these tags for LINE output.
Currently, the syntax that DOCUMENT does display for these
diagrams is **bizarre**.
The VAX BASIC Graphics manual and Reference Manual cannot be
made available online because of this bug.
The VTX line output for the VAX BASIC V3 documentation includes
**gross syntax errors** because of this bug.
Rather than display incorrect syntax, I think
this bug should be acknowledged and [for LINE output] the syntax
diagram should be omitted. In the long run, LINE output for the
languages that use stacked braces and brackets must be addressed
and a solution found.
I have placed a very short example of the code for one syntax
diagram in BOOKIE::CDD$DISK:[EVELYN.PUBLIC]sample_bug.sdml. I ran the
file through Baselevel 8 using LAYERED and LINE in the command line.
All the files DOCUMENT created are also in this directory.
You can see the results of the bug by typing the file sample_bug.LINE
in the same directory.

You are correct that we should at least make it clear in the
documentation for stacked lists and formats that the line printer
output is not going to be accurate. I'm not sure that we want to
skip the output all together, but I look at what we can do.
I'd appreciate any more feedback from others on this.
