Not sure what shell you are using, but most put $USER in your environment. The
tools depend on this being available. If you are doing something in your setup
that negates this, you should undo it, else specifically export it in your
environment.

John,
You must be logged into your system a strange way so that when
a getlogin() system call is done it must be returning root or a NULL.
You must be logged into a non-root account for srequest to work.
