I'm looking for opinions on power amps ... again. I ended not buying
the AB that I asked about a few months ago in COMMUSIC. I've looked
in MUSIC, GUITAR and here for notes on Power Amps in general and
PEAVeY DECA amps in particular...and have not been able to find
much.
I'm close to purchasing a Peavey DECA 528 power amp (it's their
newest, one-rack-space, 210w/ch into 8 ohms, power amp), and thought
I'd ask for anyone's advice on power amps in general, and the DECA
series in particular. Other than specs, how does one live-test
a power amp? What to listen for? Is "a power amp a power amp"
or are there sublte difference in the way they'll amplify a signal
such that there are audible "clues"? From notes I've read, it seems
this is a subjective area.
Any advice before I plunk down some bux on this DECA 528?

If you really care about the sound of your music, a power amp
is not just a power amp, it's as much a part of your front end as
the speakers. Amps do sound different, nd have different
characteristics depending on load and how hard you push them. The
best way to check one out is to listen the way you'll be using it.
Push it into clipping and see how it sounds and reacts.
I'm not a Peavey CS amp fan, but the DECA series is great stuff.
They had problems with the first models (so did Crown with the
Microtech 1000) but that has since been taken care of. They're not
cheap, but they sound great and are holding up well.
