Does a captive VMS account have access to gateways? IE, if a VMS user can send internal VMSMAIL, can that user also send outside through a gateway? Or can it be set via a switch? Also, if the receiving party has a forward set up using a gateway, and the VMS sending party has no privileges to send through a gateway, will it fail? | |||||

If you can send mail to a host, you can relay mail through that host
unless that host refuses to relay.
If you can send mail to MYHOST::me, and you can send mail to
US3RMC::postmaster, you can also send mail to
US3RMC::"president@whitehouse.gov". It all looks the same to your host.
Whether it gets delivered to "president@whitehouse.gov" is up to
US3RMC. US3RMC permits relays between arbitrary senders and
recipients, so it will get delivered.
Likewise for smtp%"user@host.site.dec.com",
smtp%"postmaster@relay.dec.com",
smtp%"user%acme.com@relay.dec.com", or smtp%"user@acme.com".
The gateway relays are part of the internal network, so if you allow
mail to be sent to the internal network, it can be sent to the relays.
You can make smtp%"user@acme.com" more difficult by not defining an
"alternate gateway" in UCX, but you can't prevent
smtp%"user%acme.com@relay.dec.com" without restricting outgoing mail to
something smaller than "dec.com".
In general, what the recipient has for a forwarding address has no
bearing on what the sender can and cannot do (except possibly to remove
any restrictions you place on the sender).
