| Should ra-proxy.ecom.dec.com work with realplayer 4.0 beta?
I'm asking because it doesn't work for me. It gets the
title/author/copyright info, but then gets "server timeout,
server not responding." Statistics window shows 0 bytes received;
also it appears to have only tried UDP, and not kicked over to TCP.

disk.

| G'Day,
I got some mail from the company this morning that was talking about
RealVideo. I copied the kit and installed it but didn't really think it would
work through the firewall. To my surprise it did as it is using the same ports
as RealAudio.
The player is only a beta at the moment but it works well.
David.

That is what was asked for. What was probably intended
was a way of downloading the audio content ('.ra' file?)
for playing off-line. You might be able to look at the
contents of a '.ram' file to determine the name of the
file that contains the audio data (assuming it is in
a file and not being generated in real-time). Aside from
that I don't know of any way to bypass the RealAudio
streaming protocol and getting at the original audio content
at faster than real-time speed.
I don't know of any utility to store the audio data as it
arrives and saving it in a format that can be played later.
Even if such a program existed, the audio quality might
be no better than listening in real-time since the data is
just as likely to be lost whether you are listening or
saving. Using the TCP connection type (typically used
through a firewall) might produce better results for
download.
Sounds like what is wanted here is a program to tell the
Real-Audio server to start sending across a TCP connection
and which will save the arriving data in a format that can
be played later. It can probably be done

Can the audio recorder utility be set up to process a .RAM file?
|

| No, you can't use the Sound Recorder application to record the output of
the player.
If the Real server allows the audio and/or video to be copied, the
"record" button in the Real player will work. If it doesn't work, it's
by design... it's streaming "copy protected".

| Shawn, Cool Edit 96 allows you to save audio files as .ra (all the
different variations). To stream them, you still need the realaudio
server software.

That was incorrect. What I needed to do to get things working were:
transport: use "automatically select the most efficient transport"
proxy: ra-proxy.ecom.dec.com on port 1090
my site http proxy on its port
No proxy for: .dec.com
^^^^^^^^ note the syntax. previously I had
tried "*.dec.com", that was what prevented
RA from working!

*.dec.com is for MS IE ... dec.com or .dec.com will work for Net-
