| 4422.1 | try, try again and finally... | GREGOR::OPP | | Tue Jan 28 1997 13:27 | 10 |
| On the seventh or eighth try, AltaVista Search Private eXtension
was finally successful. In the last 24 hours it's cataloged 1230 web
servers and indexed 33,251 pages. However, it's much slower than I
expected, even with the page collection style set to "aggressive".
I also have no evidence of what it was I did wrong the first 6 or 7
times I tried to build an index. Let's hope AV's customers don't
reproduce my mistakes.

I tried glimpse and glimpseindex but it not quite right.

| 4422.3 | Try AltaVista's software page | RICKS::OPP | | Thu Jan 30 1997 20:18 | 6 |
| If you go to AltaVista's software web site, the exact specifi-
cation of which I do not recall, you can down-load an equivalent
evaluation kit for Digital UNIX. Good luck,

| Not really; the Digital UNIX kit is for the web-server and it is NOT
free.

| 4422.5 | Thought it was the same conditions as NT | RICKS::OPP | | Sun Feb 02 1997 22:32 | 7 |
| I've got to admit, I did not try to down-load the UNIX version.
I saw it mentioned in the same "paragraph" as the Search Private
eXtension utility for NT. The NT demo is free for a limited time.
After that, everyone has to pay the piper to see the vista.

| 4422.6 | AVSPX for Digital UNIX fails to build index | GREGOR::OPP | | Fri Feb 07 1997 16:40 | 21 |
| RE: .4
I did download the AltaVista Search Private eXtension demo for
Digital UNIX. It comes packed as a tar file inside of a zip file.
I was able to successfully "explode" it to the individual files
and execute the set-up script (avsetup). However, when I connect
to the management web page to build a new index, it fails due to:
ms_doInitConfirm: unable to reset index
I could find no explanation of this error in the on-line documenta-
tion.
If you'd like to try the AltaVista Search (your own private Intra-
net) for Digital UNIX, you can try your luck at:
http://altavista.software.digital.com/search/index.htm
Perhaps, your luck will be better than mine.

| 4422.7 | AVSPx working on UNIX 4.0A Alpha | RICKS::OPP | | Mon Feb 17 1997 22:05 | 10 |
| By repeating the steps - downloading the file, unzipping it,
ratting it (tar in reverse), and executing avsetup (shell script)
- AVSPx was successfully installed on an Alpha PC running Digital
UNIX V4.0A. It's still building the Intranet data base but seems
to be working well. I believe the problem with my first installa-
tion came about by trying to modify the AVSPx user account before
executing avsetup.

| I downloaded the UNIX version and installed it on a v4.0 system.
However when bringing up the admin web page I got a notice that the
copy was expired. Did this happen to anyone else ?
