4483.0. "Does anybody know well DNS and DHCP ? " by BERGIL::16.44.0.158::woog () Tue Feb 18 1997 09:57
I try to use a short name for my proxy, in Easynet: www-proxy, instead of
the fully qualified name www-proxy.geo.dec.com. My PC, Windows 95, is
configured to use dynamic IP via DHCP. It works, but does somebody know the
mechanism behind the scene ? I have got two potentially different
explanations:
1) www-proxy is defined in my DNS site as the GEO proxy server (I know that
such a definition exists, but is it used in that case ?)
2) www-proxy is automatically extended with my default domain name,
geo.dec.com which is transmitted to my PC via DHCP. This his information
is transmitted via the DNS lookup request, when my browser makes a request
Against solution 2, is that I do not see the default domain in the control
setting panel (panel network, TCP-IP properties, DNS config). But I was
told it is normal.
Against solution 1 is that when I define a suffix order search (dec.com),
then it does not find the right name, saying something like: cannot find
www-proxy:8080
Does anybody know sufficiently well DNS and DHCP to help me ?
Thanks

| When you configures via DHCP, one of the things it learns is it's default
domain. When your PC looks an unqualified name, it will append the default
domain to it. Thus www-proxy becomes www-proxy.geo.dec.com.

re: how to enable really short names....
You can use your Network Neighborhood name in WINS, rather than the
verbose DHCP DNS name in IE 3.0.
My Computer-->Control Panel-->Internet-->Connection
At the bottom enble "do not use proxy server for local addresses"
My NT system is SBU-Vilcans1 on network neighborhood and can be easily
reached without knowing any DNS names. My home system is RASed, and its
Webserver is easily reached via WINs compared to the dynamic nature of
trying to maintain DHCP connections names.
Note: WINS is not ideal, but its really easy compared to getting a
static ip address to just test your webserver.
