| 4550.1 | Check Patches, Quotas, Security, Then Call Netscape | xdelta.zko.dec.com::HOFFMAN | Steve, OpenVMS Engineering | Tue Mar 18 1997 13:03 | 28 |
| :I have a customer with the following problem with the NS-COMMUNICATION product.
: VAX OpenVMS 6.1
: UCX 4.1
: DWMOTIF 1.2-4
Get the DECwindows Motif Patches for V1.2-4, and apply them.
Make sure any necessary UCX ECOs have been applied, per the
documentation.
:They installed it and it claimed to install successfully, however it seems to
:write into the [netscape.common.http-80.log]errors. file a pair of errors
:about 20 times every second. The errors are...
:
: catastrophe: can't exec new process - not owner
: info: server ffffffff exited with status 00000000
Turn on process security and file access security auditing, and see
if it creates anything interesting.
:They can stop the server via the admin page. If they start it again, the
:errors start up again.
:
:Any ideas? Perhaps an rtfm I can check out?
Contact Netscape support for assistance -- the Communications Server
is, after all, a third-party product.

| 4550.2 | Some more data would help | STAR::KENNEY | | Tue Mar 18 1997 14:29 | 25 |

Contacting Netscape probably won't help a whole lot. We Digital
did the port of the code. Your customer can do a couple of things to
help with this.
1) Get the UAF entry for the account that they run the server in.
2) Get us the PQL parameters to make sure they have not restriced
things like subprocess ceation.
3) Start a new accounting file, the roll the server and get the output
from that. If it got to the point of actually starting the server
there will be data there.
4) From the admin server dump the logs from there as well. There may
be data there.
Does the server loop forever trying to create children. Just
curious as there is a piece of logic to try to keep the system from
doing this forever. But there are paths where it does not kick in
this may be one of those paths. Hopefully, the server expert will see
this and add some more insight soon.

| Hi,
On the customer system the PQLs are...
PQL_DPRCLM 8
PQL_MPRCLM 8
We haven't let it run forever, but we now have 6600+ records in the error
file.
Checked accounting and the final status of the process HTTPD_80 is
Normal successful completion.
The UAF entry created by the installation has a PRCLM of 200.
We have not modified the account by hand.
The error file in the admserv.data directory simply says
info: successful server startup

We really need to see the whole output from a the uaf for the
account being used. Also the full output from sysgen sho/pql. Is
the system low on memory. The most likely failures are the inability
to create the mailbox used to talk to the worker process.
How many server threads do they have the server configured to
use. Have them lower it to 2, shut down the server, and start it
back up again will 2 work.

After I took this snap, I clicked on the option to shutdown the server. The
hammering on the disk stopped, but the HTTPD_80_SRV process didn't go away.
It kept running, using cpu time we stopped it.
I'm guessing this is due to something unusal at site. I'll be happy to check
anything suggested...

| 4550.10 | You have ECO 2 for UCX V4.1? | STAR::BLAKE | OpenVMS Engineering | Thu Mar 27 1997 17:11 | 7 |

V4.1, you should have at least ECO 2 installed. Otherwise strange
things can happen.
What ECO level are you at?

Nope. That's absolutely right.
