4579.0. "Pager to Web application." by HGOVC::STEPHENCHENG () Thu Mar 27 1997 05:09
One of our customers, a major pager service provider in Asia, would
like to implement a solution that allows 2-way communication between pagers
and the Internet.
The SI and Technical Support team in Hong Kong would like to know
if anyone in Digital has implemented a similar solution.
The basic requirement is to allow Internet users to send a short message
(160 ASCII characters or 80 Chinese characters in USC code)
to a pager subscriber and vice versa.
The solution to send messages from pager to pager has already been
implemented. The customer would like to add the ability
to allow communication between e-mail, pager, the Web and possibly Fax.
The solution should allow a pager/Internet subscriber to send a short message
- From a pager to an e-mail address or Web account and vice versa
- From a pager to Fax and vice versa.
When new messages arrive, notification will be sent to subscribers
either through pager or e-mail.
After this has been set up, the users would be able to:
- Use the Web browser to view the messages received or sent.
- Block or allow messages sent to them based on account name or email
address of sender.
The system should be runnable on Unix and scaleable up to about
350,000 subscribers.
Future development may use compression technique, concatenation method to
handle more than short messages.
Thanks in advance for any information or pointers.

| I was just reading an article this morning about how Skypage has a
special Web page which allows you to send a message to one of their pagers.
Maybe you can follow that up. It doesn't talk about the other direction.
It's also not clear what is meant by sending a message to a Web account since
there's no such thing. An email account does make sense.
