                          Overview 
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Netscape is now offering the newest generation of client technology in 
the Netscape Communicator Preview Release 3 (PR3).  This technology was 
very recently released, and is available for download from the Netscape 
website. It is available in both Standard and Professional Editions. 

In conjunction with this release, Netscape is offering a Preview 
Release 3 version of the Netscape Administration Kit 4.0. 
The Netscape Administration Kit is an easy-to-use collection of tools 
that allow an administrator to customize, distribute, install, and 
administer Netscape Communicator Standard and Professional Editions. 
When combined with Netscape Communicator Professional Edition, Netscape 
Administration Kit reduces the total cost of ownership by enabling
centralized management of distribution, installation, and ongoing updates
throughout 
the enterprise. 

The Preview Release 3 version of the NETSCAPE ADMINISTRATION KIT 
contains: 

CONFIGURATION EDITOR.  An easy-to-use graphical editor that defaults or locks 
   preferences. 
    + Centralize management and control of configurations 
       (works in conjunction with Netscape Professional Edition's 
       AutoAdmin feature) 
     + Set or lock Netscape Communicator preferences for security 
       management 
     + Tailor menus and buttons of the user interface to your 
       requirements 

JAR PACKAGER.  A tool to sign and package files and applications.  In future 
releases JAR packages can be used in conjunction with JavaScript triggers to 
enable automatic downloading of files.  The JAR Packager tool is unavailable 
for Macintosh systems in this release.  For details about the JAR Packager

INSTALL BUILDER.  Install Builder is a tool that enables you to incorporate 
all of your customizations into an installer that is appropriate for the media
type that you use to distribute Communicator. 

    + Choose the modules that you want to include with Communicator 
    + Include your own bookmark file, help files and custom configuration
file 

Note: Install Builder only works on 32-bit Windoes systems.  Instructions are 
included that enable Macintosh and UNIX administrators to create a modular 
installer through a manual process.

need to evaluate and test our products which, in turn, helps us 
build better products.  It is an interactive and iterative 
process through which your feedback and testing result in faster

You may test the software, but it is at your own risk and is 
not supported as part of this program.  As the names indicate, 
these products are "Preview Releases," meaning they are not 
feature complete or fully functional.  Please refer to the 
release notes included in each download to understand current 
limitations.  Also, some of the functionality already implemented 
may change based on feedback.

The Admin Kit is downloadable from Netscape's private ftp 
server.  Note that this is a "blind" ftp site (e.g. when connected 
you won't be able to get a directory listing of files).
