Installing AltaVista Search Private eXtension 1.0 on Windows NT 4.0 on
an Alphaserver 4100 at a customer site and so far we have found the
following:
(1) The on-line Handbook seems incomplete. For example, if we click
on Configuring the Index and then click on Making the Index
Available for Queries the anchor associcated with that link
is not there. Same for Page Gathering and Memory Polices.
There are others in the Troubleshooting section as well.
(2) Is there hard copy documentation available?
(3) We are trying to index the customer's intranet and in a
half hour period the Server Status seems to stay on
Cumulative Statistics of Pages Fetched: 1 and Web
Servers: 1. The recent Activity is all zeros.
Are we doing something wrong?
We put in for rules to include *.users.domain.name
For the starting URL we put in http://customers.webserver.domain/
We also tried to search www.digital.com from here and that
worked.
We know the customer has about 1000 small documents using
Process Software's Purveyor as the Web Server on a VAX 7740.
When we look at Purveyor's log we only see AltaVista hit the
home page no others and the time for that hit is about when I
stated the search.
Appreciating any inputs.
Thanks.

Hi,
I have Emailed you a copy of the online handbook.
As regards to the indexing:
Is the customer using WINS? If so you will need to use the "nodots" rule!
This looks unlikely since it's a Vax you are indexing.
Does the homepage use frames. This is not supported till V2.0 (Search97)
which is due out next month on NT and July for Digital UNIX & Solaris.
Is there a Robots Exclusions Standards file blocking Scooter?
e.g.
http://office.division.domain/robots.txt
You should really be asking your questions at
http://support.altavista.software.digital.com/ISBUTECHSUP/nfintro.htm
BUT don't expect too much, it'll take a couple of days to get an answer
and in recent weeks I've seen some answers that were "incorrect"!
A few other things you might try
Give a start URL that is the actual home page
e.g.
http://office.division.domain/index.html
Add a rule giving the IP Address of the server
e.g.
include 16.123.234.456 or include 16.234.*
Give the start URL using the Servers IP Address
e.g.
http://16.123.234.456/index.html
Start the indexing again and watch VERY carefully the DOS trace output
looking for any errors or "rules problems"
Make the Scooter more agressive. Depending on your settings, it may be
waiting for a long time after a read success or failure. Unlikely!
If you're only indexing one web server then set the Virtual Memory to
"Single Web Server" otherwise you will be running with superflous
threads and may actually degrade performance.
Good Luck
Andrew

re .1
It turns out the home page does have frames.
Think it's possible for my customer to get a beta of version 2??
Thanks!
