We have developed a three tier client server software application for a
client. The client wants to switch servers from HP to DEC ALPHA. We
developed the product in MS Visual Basic v4. It runs against SQL server
and we will upload into matching Oracle datasets. The client seems to
think that the server package will pop right in because "nt is nt".
What can I expect and are there tools to make this journey easier. They
will be purchasing six Alphas so we will need an answer. Thank you, I
can also be reached at 619-675-0040 Paul Field Project Manager

Thank you for your inquiry about Microsoft Visual Basic on DIGITAL Alpha
computers. V5 is in the final stages of field test. I expect that it will be
released in about a month.
While your customer is mostly correct that "nt is nt", you should be aware that
VBasic V4 differs alot from VBasic V5. The following list of controls in V4
are reported not to be in V5 (alpha or intel):
ANIBUTON32.OCX (Desaware)
GAUGE32.OCX (MicroHelp)
GRAPH32.OCX (w/ supporting GSW32.EXE and GSWDLL32.DLL) (Pinnacle softwa
GRID32.OCX (Microsoft)
KEYSTA32.OCX (MicroHelp)
MSOUTL32.OCX (Microsoft)
SPIN32.OCX (Outrider)
THREED32.OCX (Sheridan)
It may be inconvenient to port to the new controls. Microsoft has changed
controls providers frequently in the past and are
very likely to do so in the future. If you're wedded to some control
functionality, you might want to consider establishing a relationship
with the provider of that control so that you will get future updates.
